Why does a bed frame start squeaking?

None of those joints are perfectly rigid once assembled: wood compresses slightly under repeated load, steel threads wear a fraction looser with every cycle of weight going on and coming off, and the whole frame flexes a small, invisible amount every time someone lies down or turns over. That tiny flex is normal and harmless on its own. The squeak shows up once a joint has enough play in it that two surfaces, usually metal on metal or metal on wood, rub against each other during that flex instead of staying locked together.
This is also why a squeak nearly always gets worse gradually rather than appearing all at once: it is bolts backing out a little more each week, not a single part failing.
The fix order: work through this before buying anything
- Tighten every bolt on the frame. Strip the bed down to the bare frame and go over every bolt and screw with the right tool, not just the ones that look loose. A bolt with even a small amount of play is usually the source, and hand-tight is rarely tight enough once the frame is loaded again.
- Add washers or felt pads at metal-on-metal contact. Anywhere metal touches metal directly, a bracket against a rail, a hook against a slot, that contact point can squeak even with every bolt fully tight, simply from the frame flexing under weight. A washer, a nylon spacer, or a felt pad between the two surfaces absorbs that motion instead of letting it grind metal on metal.
- Confirm the centre support leg touches the floor. A centre leg that floats even a quarter inch above the floor lets the middle of the frame flex every time weight shifts, and that flex is a very common squeak source on queen and larger frames. Shim it if the floor is uneven, or adjust it if it has a leveling foot.
- Check the box spring or slats last. If the frame itself is now silent under hand pressure with the mattress off, put the box spring or slats back and test again before adding the mattress. A box spring's own internal frame can develop the same loose-joint squeak as a bed frame, independently of anything below it.
