Duvet and Comforter Size Chart
Quick answer
Duvets and comforters are named after the mattress size they are meant to fit (Twin, Full/Queen, King, California King), but unlike mattress sizing, duvet dimensions are not standardized across brands. The number that matters more than the label is the drop: duvet width should clear mattress width by at least the mattress thickness on each side, so a 60 in Queen mattress at a common 12 in thick needs roughly an 84 in wide duvet at minimum.
Mattress sizes are standardized across the industry; duvet and comforter sizes are not. A "Queen" duvet from one brand and a "Queen" duvet from another can measure a few inches apart, because no industry body sets the finished dimensions the way it does for a mattress. What can be calculated exactly is the drop, the amount of duvet that hangs past the mattress edge, and that number is what actually decides whether a duvet stays put.
Which duvet or comforter size name fits which mattress size?
| Duvet/comforter size name | Mattress sizes it is typically sold for | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Twin | Twin | Sometimes combined into a single Twin/Twin XL listing |
| Twin XL | Twin XL | Same width as Twin, cut longer by some brands |
| Full/Queen | Full, Queen | The most common combined listing, since Full (54 in) and Queen (60 in) are close in width |
| King | King | Sold as its own width, wider than a Full/Queen duvet |
| California King | California King | Some King duvets are marketed to fit both King and California King |
Convention, not a standard
This is widely repeated guidance rather than a measured standard. Treat it as a starting point.
These are the names manufacturers commonly use, not a published industry standard the way mattress sizes are. Check a listing's stated finished dimensions before buying, especially a Full/Queen duvet going on a Queen mattress.
Minimum duvet width to clear your mattress, by size
| Mattress size | Mattress width (in) | Minimum duvet width, 12 in mattress (in) | Comfortable duvet width, plus 4 in (in) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38 | 62 | 66 |
| Twin XL | 38 | 62 | 66 |
| Full | 54 | 78 | 82 |
| Full XL | 54 | 78 | 82 |
| Queen | 60 | 84 | 88 |
| King | 76 | 100 | 104 |
| California King | 72 | 96 | 100 |
Calculated
These figures are calculated from the numbers shown, not quoted from a manufacturer.
Minimum width follows the same drop formula used in Duvet and Comforter Size Calculator: drop each side equals (duvet width minus mattress width) divided by two, and the drop needs to clear the mattress thickness (12 in here, the most common thickness sold) or the duvet tends to ride up. A thicker mattress needs a wider duvet than this table shows; check your own stack at the calculator.
Why the "drop" matters more than the size label
Because duvet dimensions are not standardized, the label on the package is a starting point, not a guarantee. The number that actually determines whether a duvet covers the mattress properly is the drop: how far the duvet hangs down each side once it is centered on the bed. A duvet the same width as the mattress has a drop of zero and leaves the sides bare. A drop shorter than the mattress thickness will not reach the bottom edge and tends to ride up overnight. Check the mattress thickness class in the mattress thickness chart, then work out your exact drop at Duvet and Comforter Size Calculator using the duvet's stated width, not just its size name.

Is duvet sizing standardized like mattress sizing?
No. US mattress sizes are standardized across the industry, so a Queen mattress is 60 by 80 inches from any major manufacturer. Duvet and comforter dimensions are not standardized the same way: a "Queen" duvet from one brand can measure a few inches different from another brand's "Queen" duvet. Always check a listing's stated finished dimensions rather than assuming the size name alone guarantees a fit.
What size duvet do I need for a queen bed?
Duvets for a Queen mattress are commonly sold under a combined "Full/Queen" size name. For the math rather than the label, a Queen mattress is 60 inches wide, and at a common 12 inch thickness needs roughly an 84 inch wide duvet at minimum to have enough drop on each side to clear the mattress and stay in place overnight.
What is duvet drop and why does it matter?
Drop is how far a duvet hangs down past the mattress edge once centered on the bed, calculated as (duvet width minus mattress width) divided by two. It matters because a drop shorter than the mattress thickness will not reach the bottom edge of the mattress and tends to slide or ride up overnight, regardless of what size name is printed on the packaging.
Can I use a King duvet on a California King bed?
Sometimes. Some brands market a King duvet as fitting both King and California King mattresses, since the two sizes are close in width (76 versus 72 inches), while other brands sell California King as its own separate size. Because duvet dimensions are not standardized, check the specific listing's stated width rather than assuming compatibility from the size name.
Does a thicker mattress need a bigger duvet?
Yes. The minimum duvet width needed to clear a mattress and stay in place is mattress width plus twice the mattress thickness, so a thicker mattress pushes that minimum higher on both sides. A 12 inch mattress needs roughly 24 inches more duvet width than its own width; a thicker mattress needs proportionally more. Calculate your own stack at Duvet and Comforter Size Calculator.
Why do Full and Queen mattresses share the same duvet size?
Full and Queen mattresses are close in width, 54 and 60 inches respectively, so a single duvet cut wide enough for a Queen also has enough drop to look and function reasonably well on a Full. Manufacturers combine them into one "Full/Queen" listing rather than cutting a separate size for each, which keeps the product line simpler even though the two mattresses are not identical widths.
How to read the numbers on this page. Standard mattress and bedding dimensions are industry-wide and the same across manufacturers. Guidance like replacement intervals, firmness by body weight and walking clearance is convention rather than a measured standard, and every table here says which it is. Where a manufacturer does not publish a figure we leave it out instead of estimating. This is not medical advice: a mattress is not a treatment for a medical condition, and persistent pain is a reason to see a clinician.
